Sun City... Fun City?

Ah well.. big leap for me.. Hostel for the first time after being pampered at home since forever! Oh yes, for the people who don’t know, it’s NLU (National Law University), JodhpurBombay to Jodhpur.. Yaaah!! A thermophobe like me just HAD to land up in a place which is called Suryanagri (Sun City, for the linguistically challenged..).

But this place is not as bad as I thought it would be.. Admitted it doesn’t hold a candle to Bombay in the “happening” department, but it’s got its own charm. Not as small as I thought it would be too! And contrary to expectation, you can get anything you want, if you know where to look… The bustling old market is too quaint for words…

I was assisted from the beginning by my dad’s distant colleague here in Jodhpur.. He didn’t even know us.. but was so helpful it was unnerving! Going out of his way to help practical strangers and make them feel at home in a strange city when his wife had just delivered their first born, showing us the small by lanes and useful shops and nooks which we wouldn’t have found otherwise… It made me think.. (which is always dangerous)…

Mumbai was recently voted as the rudest city ever, and there was such a huge uproar against it.. We as Mumbaikars felt outraged that we were labeled as rude.. US!?!? No way… But now, what I think is… We were so used to being ‘rude’ and harried all the time that the rudeness had become a part of us.. inculcated in us… We didn’t know we were rude precisely for the fact that we were exactly that… I realized this because the people here are so friendly and polite that it’s startling for someone used to Bombay’s nuances!!! So one feels all weird in the beginning!! :)

All this, plus handling and playing with a baby as delicate as a rose petal and just as beautiful, mojdi shopping, battling the perpetual gale and dust that seems to prevail here and everything, I’m just all muddled!!! Add to this the fact that I abandoned this post in the middle to congregate with 10 other girls in one tiny room to chat about ragging, football, movies and hot guys that maybe you would get a clue as to maybe why that is!!

P.S.- This post was due almost a fortnight ago but I was so so busy that this was just lying on my table gathering dust till I decided very sweetly to bunk studying and type this up…. And now, guilty conscience.. :S

mumbai is NOT rude!! i refuse to accept that mumbaikers are rude! maybe u haven't come across the typical 'localites' who'll really get to u! seriously, its a misconception that people in small towns are generally 'innocent' n 'helpful'.. bull crap! ask me! mumbai gets the adulation that it deserves.

Divya said...

Yikes Sneha!! I'm from Bombay! I love Bombay! Relax i'd never actually belittle it! And yes there are some disgusting localites... but yeesh can't a girl state her obsevations, though they may not be too holistic!?!

sun4none said...

sneha... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :P

Allright, its how they studied rudeness has to be seen too. The Readers' Digest people define it as respecting your privacy, being polite, etc etc. Now, when you go to a neighborhood shop, the fellow's gonna ask you about all your relatives he knows of, and this, to the researchers of RD is a breach of your privacy, and that's why Mumbai's rude. Neither you, nor the shopkeeper is going to say "Thank you, It was a pleasure doing business with you. We look forward to serving you again." This is just because you know each other so well, and are at ease with each other, that the shopkeeper is going to be friends with you and take you for granted. This too, for the RD researcher is rude.

Imagine this to take place anywhere else in the world. In those cities which would rank high in the index of politeness, and we all are gonna die of asphyxiation.

marc means dat if i dint noe da shopkeeper he wud say thnx 4 buyin?
i alwys say thnx if he did my wrk fast n smiled a lil...but otherwise no..

Marc said...

Na Raghu, nobody's too bothered to say thanks for things back home, the shopkeeper will just smile(or perhaps not even that) and move on to his next customer. 'cause he's just got too many of them to take care of. Thanks, Sorry, etc are too formal for their humble beings. But not uttering those words doesn't mean they're rude. Its our way of life. Our good ol' baniyas ain't all that engrossed in their cash registers that they'll talk properly only to those who come with a gun to rob them.

And mosta the time, you just don't feel the need to thank him - you know him, he knows you - why to thank, and make it more distant and formal? :)

marc! we all know how much u "looove" mumbai :P.. anycse.. wat the fuck dawg.. who cares if a shopkeeper says Hi, hello, love u, fuck u, miss u wateva.. tell me u hav time 2 hear tht shit? u hav time 2 return tht shit? as long as he does his job properly.. just leave him alone man! and marc ji u've spent enuff no of yrs in mum 2 know where these shopkeepers come frm! grrrrr.. and idiot.. these shopkeepers really dont define mum okay! so spare them! wt the fuck! shopkeepers dont smile at u so mumbai is rude! I AM RUDE! dude... u werent there whn the bombs blasted.. u werent trapped in soem fuckin bus for 6 hrs.. u dint witness wat i witnessed.. u dunno ntn man! everyday life we see a guy not caring 4 others.. but whn it matters the most.. the same selfish bastard will lay his life 4 u without even caring who u fuckin are! and thts a bombayite for u!

@sun4none

dude! did it ever occur to you that may be marc was being sarcastic?

Divya said...

That, Mandork, is highly debatable...
But Suk, seriously man, don't get so worked up!!!

sun4none said...

@ Mandork: a big fat NO! Marc's not being sarcastic! I know what he thinks about mumbai and its people!

sneha said...

er.. i think marc was sarcastic..! (not tht anyone is asking me..)

Divya said...

Naah I agree with sun4none, i don't think he is...
Marc, care to come and clarify?

mandork said...

@ everyone

Guys! (and gurls) cummon...learn to read between the lines. Course marc was being sarcastic....
weren't you marc? (say "yes" you punk!!!)

Marc said...

Ah great to see all this speculation about what I meant, and what I not. Can I let it continue for a bit, for the heck of a laugh? hehehe...

Well, the intent was a mixed comment out of this love-hate thing I have for our good old Bombay.

@Sun4none:

One may know how much I hate the place, but there's one thing I've also mentioned about it, which I love, and which leads me to inevitably calling it home after going places. Love it or hate it, there's this thing about the place which doesn't make you feel disowned, no matter what - which all other places I've been to, fail to hold on to.

@Div:

You're partially correct there. And I still am a bit perplexed what would I do, when the thought of the witch calling me back comes to my head. Rest, kindly refer to the note for Sun4none.

@Mandork:

Yea, I was being sarcastic at some places where you thought I was, and I was not, at those where you speculated.

And now to settle it all:

This is the first time you've actually noticed and felt bombs blast in Bombay, when you were trapped in a bus for 6 hours, and out observing people. You haven't been stranded in the 1992 riots, neither the 1993 blasts. You haven't seen the blasts happen right in front of your eye in 2002. And you were home, I presume, on the night of the floods on July 26, 2006.

There're both great and nasty things which I've come across over the years sprinkled with these incidents, met and known people - but as you weigh the good and the not good, its usually the good that outweighs, so you carry on with it, ignoring the rest.

I'll quote the l'il gal here, who used to remind me everytime: Presumption is the mother of all fuck-ups.

Peace!

And thanks for all the fish and all that :)

sun4none said...

hmm.. i choose to ignore "the rest".. i wish to see the good cz it's always the ugly side that's projected and brought up.. RD may kiss my ass.. check out US.. one day terror and suddenly the enitre world is terrorist.. they are scared.. they are insecure.. kids dunno if they'll see tomorrow so they go on sleeping around with their loved ones.. all fucked up minds.. mumbai.. how secured are we! we've kinda accepted ths fate.. i dunno if its self-created! but i fail to understnd the govt.. wtf are thy upto.. y blame the govt.. look at us Indians.. wat are we doin? wat do we do? nothing! we just bitch about the fact tht nothings done, get angry.. mebbe get up and shout in frustration.. but thats where we all stop.. nothing is done bout it.. no one does nothing about it.. we just belive that nothing can be done about it.. we are just fed that nothing can be done about it! "I" do nothing about it.. "I" am to blame! If only we realise.. if only we wake up.. if only we act selflessly! if only we act! mere words and thots are a waste of time and energy.. all words and no actions.. thts all thts been happening.. thts all that I've been doing.. may be someday it wont remain this way.. mebbe someday i'll wake up.. mebbe someday i'll make a difference! may be someday we'll make a difference! someday soon! just a question now.. how soon is soon! i wish i wudnt have 2 think twice before i say.. "I AM PROUD TO BE AN INDIAN"

@marc

wat makes you think that we (or me) felt the shitty stuff that happened in mumbai for the first time?
FYI i was stranded for 8 hours when the ghatkopar blasts took place in 2004...Was stranded in thana station for 12 hours wen the 26/7 happened....not to mention, i lost a dear pal that day.....
So maybe you've just seen the shitty stuff....but i have actually felt it!!!

raghu said...

ha reminds me of dis chapter called war by victor hugo.. he argues dat sorrow cant b mesured...evry1s sorrow is grav in der own unique way...mandorks felt it marcs cin it... but its all da same.. no1 likes it..no1 shud.. but v r missin an imp point here... mumbais changin...n v r responsible 4 it..mumbais not resilient its indiffrent... mumbais not resilient its desperate... its an xact contrast 2 hw its bein potrayed... no1 climbs a train 2 say im proud 2 b mumbaikar...but jus 2 make ends meet...
its nice 2 c sukrit gettin wrked up..hes passionate.. vich is nice 2 c...
i hav bin in mumbai 4 14 outta my 17 yrs... so i dont noe ne other city really...but ven u ca man stugglin 4 life..fitin death in front of ur eyes...u hav 2 help him no matter wat no matter wich city u go 2 ppl r gonna help him...its weird cos i think never u go ppl wud help diein humans
dats da diff btwn humanity n politeness... dey r 2 diff wrds n hav 2 diff meanins... v r not polite but v r humane only ven person is diein...i say dis cos on the other end of the spectrum u hav kids bein tortured in zari indutry..which can hardly b called humane...
genralisina city as vast n diverse as mumbai is a pain.. . vich shud b best avoided...v must all do wat v feel is gud..wats is right...dat is the our small contri 2 da city v luv so much.. abou which v hate 2 hear crap.. n sumtimes da burtal n harsh truth..

Wow. This seems like a popular blog. Going by the comments on this post, that is.

Well rude or not, I won't comment - but this I'll definitely say -Mumbaikars are definitely loyal to their city. Or so it seems.

Nice job on the blog. Post more pics of Jodhpur please.
